BaiTip of the Day - August 14, 2018: Using Device Groups to speed up firmware updates

Device Confusion? You can assign devices to device groups in the OMC. The following steps will make your upgrade tasks much easier in the future.

  1. Go to CPE/Register/Device

  2. Click on + sign in Device Group

  3. Name group something like Gen1 Band 43 Atom 19, Gen1 Atom 11, Gen2 Atom 14 and so on.

  4. Then go through your devices in the CPE section and select the ones to assign to a specific group.

  5. Once selected, click Move to Device Group.

When upgrading firmware follow the following steps:

  1. Go to CPE/Upgrade/Software

  2. Click on the + sign

  3. Select ODU or IDU Software Upgrade (outdoor/indoor unit)

  4. Select Device Group for the specific type of hardware you want to upgrade.

  5. Select all devices with the same software version to upgrade at a time. They will be done in batches of 5 units at a time.

  6. Select Upgrade Immediately or schedule a time and date at the bottom of the New Upgrade Task box

  7. Select Firmware version to upgrade to.

  8. Click Finish.

Great tip - I use groups for this reason. Now if they would only show the model on the selection page it would be easier to do this. Otherwise you need to have a list of the serial#s or names#s of the proper model in another window or on piece of paper to compare so you move the correct devices. Best bet is to assign the device to a group when you get it, but that doesn’t help with the existing devices we all have.
